Pele's Hair

Today I went rock shopping.

Some of the goodies I came home with are rings for the webshop, a beautiful hunk of Lapis (also to be listed) and a whole bunch of rutilated quartz rough.

I am a sucker for inclusions and watching rutile dance through the stone as you move it is insanely hypnotic and beautiful.

After having a chance to sit down and get a closer look I had a flashback to a museum in Hawaii and seeing Pele's Hair for the first time.

For those of you not familiar, Pele's Hair is extremely fine volcanic glass fibers. Seeing it you would never dream of it starting out life as lava. Mother Nature really does produce the most amazing things.

The photos I have taken don't quite do justice to how pretty the rough is I bought today and I am really excited now to dust off the wheels and get cabbing.

And the stone that triggered the memory of this....

I bought 11 pieces in total and they are all so different from each other. My plans are to make some palm stones and some cabochons. If possible I really want to try for a matching pair if a piece is suitable for it!

I am also wondering if I should list any rough for sale for fellow lapidaries? Please comment if this is something you might be interested in! I will be listing lapidary rough down the track but currently focusing on finished items for the websites official launch.
