ABOUT

Who am I?

I am a Wife, a Mum and a Rock Geek.

I grew up on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
Sunny days were spent walking on rocky beaches where I used to pick up as many stones as I could carry. When my pockets were full I used to take off my shoes and full them with rocks too!

One of my favourite early memories is sitting quietly, by myself, having been given permission to go upstairs and look at Grandad Erle’s gemstone collection. They were in a glass doored, wooden cabinet, in the sunroom at the top of the stairs. It was a big deal to be allowed up there alone* and I remember sitting there and marvelling at them all like time had frozen.

(*I may not have been alone. I have since found out I was only one when they lived in this house! This is now officially my earliest memory. I guess rocks are just in my blood!)

Studying gemmology here in Melbourne I expanded on my love of rocks learning all about their scientific physical properties. The conditions they form in, their durability, special characteristics and much much more.

My brain is full of random information relating to gemstones and jewellery and I want to share my passion with people!
I want to not only make jewellery that people will enjoy wearing but also pass on the excitement I find in these things.

I love that jewellery is bought in celebration, to mark events and show love. Jewellery is coveted and passed down through generations and even pieces of little monetary value can hold very strong emotional ones.

I also get great joy in sharing information and I love history. Do you know why platinum was not used more in jewellery until the 1900’s? Platinum has a very high melting temperature and jewellers were unable to get their bench flames hot enough to effectively work this material. That was until after the advent of bottled oxygen in 1877! Advancing technology is constantly shaping the way the jewellery trade creates and evolves and it is just fascinating.

The jewellery here for sale in Something with Stones is both made by me here in Melbourne, Australia and also sourced in. I can make some items to order and also offer a sourcing service.

I am a qualified gemmologist and guarantee all gemstones sold through this site are as described. Jewellery shopping should be a fun experience and I am always happy to have a chat!

I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities. Let's connect.
